What it is

Bay Leaf Manifestation is a simple fire ritual drawn from Mediterranean folk magic: write a desire, name, or short intention on a dried bay laurel leaf, burn the leaf completely, and dispose of the ashes (scattered outdoors, released into water, or buried). The burning is understood as an act of release — once the leaf is gone there is nothing left to anxiously recheck or second-guess. The practice spans ancient Apollonian oracle tradition, European folk witchcraft, and contemporary WitchTok, and requires only a bay leaf, a marker, and a flame-safe surface.

How to do it

1. Get one dried bay leaf (from a grocery store or craft store) and a fine-tip marker.
2. Hold the leaf and think clearly about what you want — keep it short enough to write in a few words.
3. Write the desire, a single word, or a name directly onto the leaf surface.
4. Hold the leaf with metal tongs or forceps over a fireproof dish (cauldron, ceramic bowl, or ashtray).
5. Touch a lighter or candle flame to one corner of the leaf and let it burn completely without blowing it out.
6. Watch the smoke and sit quietly for a moment; the smoke rising is the traditional signal of release.
7. Collect the ashes and either scatter them outside, bury them in soil, or release them into running water.
8. Do not revisit or 'check' on the wish — the burning marks the end of the ritual.

Where it comes from

Rooted in ancient Mediterranean and Greek tradition: bay laurel was sacred to Apollo, whose priestesses at Delphi inhaled laurel smoke to enter prophetic states. Romans associated bay with victory and purification. The folk practice of writing wishes on bay leaves and burning them carried forward through European green witchcraft and became a widely shared WitchTok and YouTube trend from around 2020 onward, popularized notably by astrologer and creator Ryan Lu (@e.mo.tions) who began posting about it in 2021.
