Sweetener Method / Spell Jar

Also known as Sugar jar, Manifestation jar

You fill a small glass jar with honey or sugar, drop in a handwritten note naming the person or outcome you want, seal it, and burn a candle on top while holding your intention in mind — repeating the candle ritual over days or weeks.

Widespread TikTok's "How to Use A Sugar Jar Spell" discover page shows 3.8M posts. Individual TikTok videos from creators like @drkatetomas and @withhoneyandfire have 51K–78K likes each. The #witchtok parent tag has billions of views. The technique is covered across multiple dedicated witchcraft retailers (House of Intuition LA, Art of the Root, Original Botanica, Lucky Mojo) and appeared on Autostraddle (Sophie Saint Thomas, 2019), indicating mainstream editorial recognition beyond niche witchcraft communities.

What it is

A sweetener spell jar (also called a honey jar or sugar jar) is a folk-magic container ritual rooted in African American Hoodoo tradition. The practitioner writes a petition paper naming their target or goal, places it inside a jar filled with a sweet substance — honey for long-term work, sugar or sugar water for faster results — along with optional herbs and personal items, then seals the jar and repeatedly burns a colored candle on its lid to "feed" the spell. The core logic is sympathetic magic: the sweetness of the contents is meant to soften the named person's feelings, ease a difficult situation, or draw in favorable outcomes like love, reconciliation, career favor, or self-love. The sugar jar variant is widely treated as a beginner-friendly, faster-acting alternative to the honey jar.

How to do it

  1. Set a clear intention: decide exactly what you want to sweeten — a specific person's feelings toward you, a workplace situation, or your own self-regard.
  2. Write a petition paper: write the target person's full name an odd number of times (3, 7, or 9), then rotate the paper 90 degrees and write your own name over theirs the same number of times.
  3. Add herbs and personal items (optional): place rose petals and cinnamon for love, basil and cloves for prosperity, or lavender and chamomile for peace inside the jar alongside the folded petition.
  4. Fill the jar with sweetener: pour honey for slow, lasting work or use granulated sugar or sugar water for faster results. Speak your intention aloud as you pour.
  5. Seal the jar and fix a candle on the lid: press a pink candle (love/self-love) or a white candle (general sweetening) onto the lid with a small flame to melt the base, or use a candle holder on top.
  6. Light the candle and hold your intention in mind while it burns; let it burn down completely for the first working.
  7. Maintain the spell: relight a fresh candle on the jar at regular intervals — daily for urgent work, or weekly aligned to moon phases — until you see results.
  8. Dispose of the jar when the work is done: bury it, dispose of it at a crossroads, or place it in running water, depending on the tradition you follow.

Where it comes from

Rooted in African American Hoodoo/Conjure tradition that developed in the American South from the 18th–19th centuries onward, blending West African, Native American, and European folk magic. Early forms used open saucers of molasses or syrup with a candle; the sealed glass jar became standard as commercially packaged honey and mason jars entered American households in the late 19th–early 20th century. Popularized online from the early 2010s onward via the Lucky Mojo Curio Company (Catherine Yronwode's influential catalog and website) and accelerated by the #WitchTok wave on TikTok from 2020 onward.
