Void State

You lie still in bed, let your body fall asleep while keeping your mind aware, and once you notice total blackness and silence with no body sensations, you silently state that your desired outcome is already true.

Widespread TikTok has dedicated discovery pages for "void state," "how to enter the void state," "void state explained," and a named sub-trend called VoidTok (#voidtok). The broader #manifestation hashtag on TikTok has 48.7 billion views (TikTokHashtags.com data). Multiple YouTube tutorials, Tumblr guides with hundreds of notes, and a 2025 academic paper in the International Journal of Communication all document manifestation sub-communities — including void-state practice — as a large, active TikTok phenomenon.

What it is

The Void State is a hypnagogic technique where you remain mentally conscious while your body fully relaxes into sleep-onset, producing a condition of pure awareness with no bodily sensation, thought, or identity. Practitioners believe this threshold state bypasses resistance and doubt, making any affirmation or declared intention feel instantly real to the subconscious. The technique borrows directly from Neville Goddard's mid-20th-century "State Akin to Sleep" (SATS) teaching but gained its current name and mass following through the TikTok and Tumblr shifting community, which uses it both to manifest desires and to "shift" to alternate realities. Success stories circulate widely, but many practitioners report the state is difficult to reach consistently, and community guides often caution against treating it as the only valid method.

How to do it

  1. Find a quiet place and lie on your back in a comfortable position. Do this when you are genuinely tired — bedtime or just after waking are the most commonly recommended windows.
  2. Close your eyes and slow your breathing to a deliberate rhythm (roughly five counts in, five counts out). Allow your body to sink and grow heavy without forcing it.
  3. Let thoughts drift past without engaging them. Do not visualize scenes or form mental pictures — the goal is to let thought content thin out entirely, leaving only a sense of watching.
  4. Notice the transition signals: a floating or weightless sensation, a deep hum or silence, the disappearance of bodily boundaries, and a field of plain darkness behind your closed eyes. This threshold is what practitioners call the void.
  5. Once you register the void — no body, no noise, no running thoughts — calmly and silently state your desired outcome as a present-tense fact. Use short, first-person declarations: 'I have [desire].' Repeat once or twice without strain.
  6. Allow yourself to drift into sleep from that point. Do not try to visualize or feel the outcome; the declaration alone is considered sufficient. Manifestation is said to appear in waking life after waking from the state.
